My guiding vision is to help people move from acknowledgement of social problems to collaboration across ideological divides through empathy.

I am a scholar of media and communication. Communication is something people do all the time, whether they realize it or not. I want to better understand what is so unique about the human way to see the world and interact with each other.

I am a writer. Having authored a number of academic publications, I shifted my focus to writing nonfiction books on topics that interest me the most. They include: empathy, communication, human nature, bias, truth, polarization.

I am an educator. I love explaining complex theories to make them relevant for people's lives. The goal is not to have others think like me, but to help them find their own paths using ideas I provide in creative ways.

I am in-between. As a media literacy practitioner, I have been in-between communication studies and education. As an immigrant, I am in-between Russian and American cultures. As somebody with a passion for bridging ideological divides, I want to be in-between political communities in order to connect them.

What else am I?
An editor of the Journal of Media Literacy Education. An affiliated faculty of the Media Education Lab. A part-time professor at Columbia College Chicago. A synesthetic polyglot. A mom.
