In my previous post about Bill Cosby I wrote that this story reveals how hard it is to challenge the broken system. Ferguson is another case in point. We are not talking about individual wrongdoers, we are talking about the system that lets their crimes slide. And it's not some abstract ruthless machine at work here. It's living breathing people that with their collective actions, or non-actions, let injustice be.
This is what we social scientists calls with a fancy word hegemony. It is so much easier to think that only bad people get punished. But don’t fall into this trap. We participate in the system by being complacent, by thinking that it’s somebody else’s responsibility to deal with the mess. Stay alert and do something.
