This is the latest essay I published in my project Me, Looking for Meaning.

Have you recently felt annoyed by someone you live with?

Maybe they leave dishes in the sink longer than you would. Maybe they put things away in places that make no sense to you. Maybe they clean too often—or not often enough. Maybe they cook differently, organize the house differently, wake up earlier than you’d like, or somehow always manage to be in the kitchen exactly when you need it.

The details are almost beside the point. Most of us can think of countless small habits that have irritated us at one time or another. And often these are not people we dislike. They are people we love, people we chose to live with, and people whose company we otherwise genuinely enjoy.

So why is living together so difficult?
