Emotional Pain
PAGE IN PROGRESS
What you see here is a page of my hypertext book Me, Looking for Meaning. Initially empty, it will slowly be filled with thoughts, notes, and quotes. One day, I will use them to write a coherent entry, similar to these completed pages. See this post to better understand my creative process. Thank you for your interest and patience! :)

According to the Epicureans, pleasures and pains can be physical or mental. While physical ones only concern the present, the mental ones also include the past and future. Therefore, mental (emotional) pain is potentially greater than physical pain.
Emotional pain is any kind of discomfort that is produced by our own emotions. It’s different from physical pain, but it can be very distracting or even oppressing our whole existence. We can think of emotional pain ranging from 1 to 10, 1 being mild annoyance and 10 being depression leading to suicidal thoughts.
Emotions pain is not uncommon. Buddhism: life is suffering. We experience physical and emotional discomfort all the time. It propels us to do stuff.
Trying to escape the discomfort and pain, we try to infinite them. But this is not the answer. The answer is becoming more aware of them: mindfulness. Mindfulness helps us recognize that the pain comes or is exacerbated by us trying to fight the emotions. When we allow ourselves to experience the emotions, this can help relieve the discomfort and pain they seem to cause.
we may try to escape emotional pain by using our imagination, which can backfire. Think what happens when you try analyzing the problem, looking for solutions in circular thoughts. This can create a problem that does not exist or make an existing problem seem bigger than it is.
hurting others is often a result if experiencing unprocessed emotional pain (that one does not fully comprehend or acknowledge)

« much of the time, paying such close attention to the results of our old habits is downright painful. We can become disenchanted with the disenchantment process itself (practicing second gear) and shift from second gear into reverse, moving backward. Why? Our brains have evolved to try to minimize the amount of pain we have to endure.«
