Meaning as Importance
PAGE IN PROGRESS
What you see here is a page of my hypertext book Me, Looking for Meaning. Initially empty, it will slowly be filled with thoughts, notes, and quotes. One day, I will use them to write a coherent entry, similar to these completed pages. See this post to better understand my creative process. Thank you for your interest and patience! :)

"Importance" from "import" in Late Middle English - signify. From Latin "portare" carry. What is being carries? Meaning: ideas, associations, thoughts, feelings. Why "im"? It meant "in" in Latin. We bring in meanings that are not there.
Fox to Little Prince: "It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.” [sunk in cost effect]
Little Prince: "All men have the stars… but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For other they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For my businessman they were wealth. But all these stars are silent. You — you alone — will have the stars as no one else has them… In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night… And when your sorrow is comforted (time soothes all sorrows) you will be content to have known me. You will always be my friend. You will want to laugh with me. And you will sometimes open your window, so, for that pleasure… And your friends will be properly astonished to see you laughing as you look up at the sky!"
It is difficult to question what is important for us or to understand how for somebody else something is important (if it is not important to us). Challenges of empathy.
Stalker by Tarkovsky: the field that the travelers are walking through, the buildings, all the aspects of the Zone acquire special importance when we are watching the movie, because we are told that they are important. They are the Zone.
