How I Will Help You

Picture
First, you will get in touch with me through this contact form. We will schedule a time to talk (phone, Zoom, Signal or Telegram). During the conversation, you will tell me more about the manuscript, your challenges, and goals. I will take a look at your text (or draft), at any stage of the process. At this point, we will also discuss your budget and determine what kind of services you definitely need and can afford. My pricing policy is flexible, so we should be able to find a good solution for you!

After our first conversation, I will send you a written recommendation about the editing services that will best fit your project, including an estimate of the price. All of this is free, so if my recommendation and/or fee do not work for you, you can simply walk away from this collaboration. Alternatively, we could continue the conversation and find a balance between the work that needs to be done and the price you can afford.

SETTING UP A PLAN
After the initial conversation, I will create a written proposal that will include the following information:
  • how long the editing process will take;
  • what it will involve (see options below);
  • how many times I will read the document;
  • how many times we will talk (if necessary);
  • what the cost will be.
The proposal may include other details relevant to your specific needs.

You will review the plan and let me know if it works for you. If we determine together that some changes are needed, I’ll update the plan in writing. When I give you my estimate, you may feel stressed thinking about what you can and cannot afford. Remember that we can figure out together how I can help you based on the budget you have. As you will see below, the plan usually involves some flexibility (the number of conversations and/or readings).

PROVIDING THE SERVICES
What happens at this stage depends on the plan we have set up for our collaboration. It also depends on what stage you are in with your project. If you only have a very rough draft or even just a list of bullet points - which is totally fine - we will probably go with one coaching session (or a few of them, if you would like more support). If you have written the manuscript and want to make sure that the structure makes sense, I can do developmental editing. If the structure and flow are good, we will choose copyediting. See below what type of services may fit your needs.

Coaching session(s)
It is not uncommon to have some great ideas but not to know how to start writing them down. If you are at this stage and need some support, I will be happy to offer advice. After the coaching session, you will have a list of concrete steps to take that will help you start writing. One coaching session may be enough, or we can decide to have two or three. The process will depend on how your writing will go.

First-draft review
If you do have the first draft, no matter how rough it is, send it my way! I will read it and write down a detailed written review for you to work with as you are improving your manuscript. The review will contain specific suggestions about the changes you need to make in order to highlight the strengths of your writing and handle its weaknesses without being overwhelmed.

Developmental editing
You need this kind of editing at the stage when your manuscript is no longer in its roughest form, but its overall structure and flow require some work. I will review the text you have written so far to determine how easy it would be for readers to follow your ideas. Are your key points clear? Do you tap into the curiosity of your audience? Do you take into consideration their prior knowledge? How do you use examples to support your arguments? Is there a smooth flow between different parts of your book or article?

Considering all these questions, I will write a written review of the manuscript's strengths and weaknesses. The report will contain a list of specific steps for you to take and will be accompanied by a copy of your text with embedded comments. The developmental editing stage may include one or more readings, depending on your preference. This stage can be also combined with a coaching session if you feel that you would like to talk things through.

Copyediting
If/once the structure and flow are in good shape, I will review your text paragraph by paragraph, sentence by sentence. My goal will be to see if everything connects smoothly on this micro level. I will pay attention to details of grammar, word usage, spelling, and punctuation. If your manuscript needs to be written in a certain style - MLA, APA, Chicago, etc. - I will help you make sure that all the relevant rules are followed. After the reading is done, you will receive my corrections and comments made directly in the document. This editing stage may involve one or more readings, which we will determine together.

Any questions? If you are interested in my services and would like to learn more, I will be happy to hear from you! Please use my contact form to get in touch.
